Removals to Bulgaria from the UK

Planning how to transport your belongings can be one of the most complicated parts of moving to Bulgaria. This independent guide explains the main removal and shipping options, customs procedures after Brexit, documents you may be asked to provide, questions to ask removal companies and practical issues that can affect delivery to a Bulgarian property.

Since Brexit, household goods transported from Great Britain to Bulgaria cross an external EU customs border. Even used personal belongings may require a customs declaration.

Quick comparison of removal methods

Each method suits a different type of move. Costs shown are relative rather than fixed figures, because every quotation depends on your own shipment.

Ways to Transport Your Belongings

Most people shipping belongings to Bulgaria choose one of the following services, or a combination of them.

Dedicated removal vehicle

Suitable for a full household move. It is normally more expensive but offers a more direct and predictable service.

Part load or groupage

Several customers share space in the same vehicle and pay for the volume they use. This is often more economical, but collection and delivery dates may be less flexible.

Boxes and baggage

Suitable for clothing, books and a limited number of personal belongings. Charges may be based on size, weight or volume.

Pallet shipping

Suitable for boxed items that can be securely stacked. Customers must confirm collection, unloading and customs arrangements.

Self-drive van

The customer handles the driving, loading and unloading, but must also arrange suitable vehicle insurance, customs paperwork, road charges and border requirements.

Air freight

A faster but generally more expensive option for urgent or important belongings.

Vehicle transportation

Cars, motorcycles, caravans and trailers require separate transportation and documentation arrangements.

Dedicated vehicle versus part load

Dedicated vehicle
A dedicated vehicle normally carries one customer's belongings and travels on an agreed schedule. It can provide faster and more predictable delivery, but generally costs more.
Part load, shared load or groupage
A part load, shared load or groupage service combines several customers' belongings in one vehicle. Customers pay for the space they use, but collection and delivery can take longer because the operator must coordinate several shipments.

Whichever option you choose, ask whether your belongings will be transferred between depots or vehicles during the journey. Extra handling increases the risk of damage and can make it harder to trace a missing box.

Customs After Brexit

Since Brexit, Great Britain has been outside the EU customs union. Household belongings transported from Great Britain to Bulgaria therefore cross an external EU customs border and require customs formalities. People genuinely transferring their normal residence from the UK to Bulgaria may qualify for relief from import duties on eligible used personal belongings. Relief is not automatic and must be approved by the appropriate Bulgarian customs authority.

Conditions that can apply to transfer-of-residence relief
  • •The person normally lived outside the EU customs territory for a continuous period of at least 12 months.
  • •The person is transferring their normal residence to Bulgaria.
  • •The belongings were possessed and used at the former normal residence.
  • •The belongings will continue to be used for the same personal purpose in Bulgaria.
  • •The nature or quantity of the goods must not suggest commercial use.
  • •Private vehicles generally need evidence of registration and must normally have been used by the person for at least six months before leaving the former residence.
  • •Except in special circumstances, qualifying property should enter free circulation within 12 months of establishing normal residence in Bulgaria.
  • •Relief may be possible before residence is established if the person undertakes to establish normal residence within six months and meets the customs authority's conditions.
  • •Property admitted duty-free remains under customs supervision for 12 months and must not normally be lent, hired, transferred, used as security or sold without notifying customs.
  • •Transfer-of-residence relief does not cover alcoholic products, tobacco products, commercial means of transport or most equipment intended for commercial use.

We do not calculate customs duty or VAT. Goods which do not qualify for relief may be subject to duty, import VAT and clearance charges. Confirm your own position with Bulgarian Customs or a customs broker before your shipment is collected.

Customs document checklist

Requirements vary according to the person, goods, customs office and type of move. Ask your removal company or customs broker for a written document list before collection.

Packing inventory example

A numbered inventory is normally required for customs. Keep it simple, consistent and honest.

ReferenceRoomDescriptionQuantityValue
Box 1KitchenUsed plates, cups and cutlery30Estimated used value
Box 2BedroomUsed clothing and bedding25Estimated used value
Box 3StudyUsed books40Estimated used value
Item 4Living roomUsed wooden dining table1Estimated used value

Vague descriptions such as "miscellaneous items" may cause problems at the border. Every box should have a number that matches the inventory, and the same numbering should appear on the box itself.

What to ask a removal company

Work through these questions with every company before comparing prices, and ask for the answers in writing.

Access at your Bulgarian property

Delivery conditions in Bulgaria can be very different from Britain, particularly in villages and older town centres.

Warn the removal company in advance about any of the following:

  • •Narrow village roads
  • •Low branches and overhead cables
  • •Unmade or badly surfaced roads
  • •Weight restrictions
  • •Tight gateways
  • •Properties on steep hills
  • •Limited turning space
  • •Cars blocking access
  • •Flats without lifts
  • •Long distances between the vehicle and the entrance

Provide photographs, measurements and a dropped map pin before the quotation is finalised. The company may need to transfer your belongings into a smaller vehicle for the final part of the delivery, and that arrangement should be priced in advance rather than discussed on the day.

What to bring and what to replace

Often worth bringing
  • • Sentimental belongings
  • • Good-quality furniture
  • • Specialist equipment
  • • Items that are expensive or difficult to replace
  • • Personal collections
  • • Tools in good condition
Often cheaper to replace
  • • Low-value bulky furniture
  • • Old mattresses
  • • Worn flat-pack furniture
  • • Low-value electrical appliances
  • • Items damaged by repeated handling
  • • Furniture that will not fit the Bulgarian property

UK and Bulgarian domestic electricity is generally compatible, but the plugs differ. Fitting Bulgarian plugs or buying replacement leads is usually better than relying permanently on multiple travel adaptors.
